Creamers Field Birding - Saturday June 23, Fairbanks

Creamer's Field is a former dairy that has become an important place for both local and migrating birds to stop coming north and going south. This was formerly a daily farm. The owners decided to sell it and the people of the city of Fairbanks decided to buy it. Later the AK F&G took over the operation and added about another 1500 acres. This is important for the both the local Airport, Eielson AFB and Ft. Wainwright Army base as it helps contain the birds in an area and out of the flight paths for the planes.

Any given time you will see Sandhill Cranes and Canada Geese grazing in the fields. There are Cliff and Tree Swallows flying low over the ponds and grasses gathering insects. The Robins are quite plentiful gathering insects also. There are White-Crowned Sparrows, Yellow Warblers, Townsend's Warblers, and several species of Thrush and I have difficulty with their songs. Currently the little birds are nesting and they are hard to see...well except for the swallows and you can see the Cliffies on the side of the barn and Tree's are in the boxes in the fields. You only see the others when they deem it prudent to let you.
